about

Black Gold’s opening and title track begins with several seconds of distortion that conjure thoughts of a jet engine. This turns out to be an apt metaphor for the song and the album in general. Those sounds soon give way to Williamson’s masterful guitar licks, heavy drum kicks, and soul stirring vocals. Similar to a jet engine, the album takes off from this point, and the listener can do little but hold on and enjoy the ride.

The album is replete with sensational tracks, but “I Don’t Want to Be Alone” is worthy of additional praise. The song is a perfect example of Williamson’s virtuosic talents as it gives room for each musical element to shine individually and also as a cohesive unit. All in the service of expressing a universal human sentiment.

In an era where both musicians and listeners unfortunately appear to pay less attention to album artwork, it’s also worth noting Black Gold’s cover art. Each CD jacket is hand printed on an old LP cover. The outcome is a tactile experience that is befitting a truly remarkable record.
