The Sioux (among other bands) called a "vision quest", Hanblechia. A "vision quest" was a solo spiritual journey(without the use of hallucinogenics) where an individual spent 7-10days without food. The "vision quest" was a time for the Great Mystery to communicate with an individual instructing them on there role in the tribe and mortal life. After there "purpose" in life was revealed to them, the individual would return back to the tribe and fulfill his destiny.
